Catholic Myths That Need to Go Away

I’m Only Saying This Once: Catholic Myths That Need to Go Away

Theological accusations against Catholic teaching fit neatly into either of two categories:
1.) scholarly, well-intentioned, but fatally flawed due to some contextual, historical, or systematic error or misunderstanding, or
2.) complete and utter nonsense and evidence that the person understands so little about Catholicism that they cannot correctly assert what the Catholic believes.
Don’t zoom in. Your head will hurt.
My days as a Protestant are not so far behind me that I’ve forgotten the ways I used to oppose the Catholic Church.  In my Evangelical years, I’d employ the nonsense arguments pretty frequently.  In my mind, the Catholic Church was so uncool and so far from a “relationship with Jesus” that it didn’t even matter if I portrayed her teachings accurately.  Wrong was wrong, right?  As I slowly migrated to a more Reformed, confessional Christianity, I found new reasons to hate Catholicism.  I studied my own faith as well as the Catholic faith and could explain why I wasn’t in agreement with “the RCC.”  If I could say one positive thing about this leg of the journey, it is this: at least I tried.  Though equally incorrect, my later anti-Catholic sentiments were, at the very least, an attempt at truth.  I cared to know the truth.
I am beginning a new post series that will focus on those silly, ridiculous, completely off-the-wall anti-Catholic arguments that just really need to go.  Today’s serious Christian need not bother with ludicrous caricatures of the Church that neither Catholics nor scholarly Protestants even consider to be sensible.  They’re the arguments that stop the unsuspecting Catholic or learned Protestant in her tracks with dumbfounded incredulity.  They’re the arguments that make a person scratch their head and say, “Wait…what?”  The arguments are out there – and they need to go away.
I’m only saying this once.  After I post on a topic, I will respond to further assaults on the Catholic intellect with a quick and handy link to my own blog.
The first post of the series will be published this week and will debunk the myth that Catholics are violating Scripture by using the title “Father” for our priests.  ”Call no man father” is the common bible proof text for this crazy-pants allegation and is, of course, flagrantly fictitious.  Stay tuned!
